Competitive Carbide started in April 1992 with five people. From the first day of doing business Competitive Carbide has been committed to manufacturing high quality special cutting tools for its customers. Today Competitive Carbide has 20 employees, including three full-time engineers, and continues to manufacture special indexable cutting tools and form inserts. The entire company is under one roof covering 13,000 square feet. Recently the company was awarded first place as the fastest growing company in the Great Lakes Mentor Region.

Company Product Line

Competitive Carbide designs and builds special indexable cutting tools ranging from simple single-pocket boring bars to some of the most complex multi-pocket feedout heads and form milling cutters found in the industry. The Carbide division makes special form inserts from groovers to some of the most complex and tight tolerance forms used today. The company manufactures cutting tools from customer provided blueprinted items to complete design and build tooling for multi-spindle flexible-manufacturing systems and also dedicated tooling for transfer-line applications. Competitive Carbide's tools are used in the manufacture of automobiles, bearings, railroad wheels, specialty broaches, tubing, logging equipment, tractors, hand tools, linear tracks, and a wide variety of other applications.

Manufacturing & Engineering Capabilities

Competitive Carbide believes that its competitive advantage lies in effectively enhancing the benefits of state-of-the-art technology. Here all manufacturing prints are drawn on the current version of SolidEdge (by Unigraphics) a complete 3-D solids CAD package. The current version of MasterCAM is used for manufacturing cutting tools. This software plays an integral part in supporting Competitive Carbide's capability of 5 axis CNC Machining and 5 axis CNC Grinding. To ensure that critical tolerances are held, machining centers inspect parts right on the machine with Renishaw probes. In addition, custom software for engineering and manufacturing is written in house to ensure consistency and reliability time and time again.

Competitive Carbide's equipment list includes four 5 axis CNC vertical machining centers, a CNC lathe, a 5 axis live-head CNC turning center, and a CNC I/D & O/D grinder. The manual equipment includes a Moore jig grinder, surface grinders, I/D and O/D grinder, horizontal mill, and bridgeports. The Carbide department has three 5 axis CNC grinders, 4 axis CNC wire EDM, surface grinders, and a wheel dresser. Inspection is done with optical comparators (including one J&L high resolution comparator), and with probes on the CNC machines. Competitive Carbide's state-of-the-art equipment and experienced personnel gives it the capability to consistently manufacture high precision tooling for even the most rigorously demanding applications in the metal cutting industry.
