"We strive to daily meet and exceed our customer's expectations by offering solutions to manufacturing challenges and reliable, prompt service support. The result of dedication to these goals is that we and our customers will be successful."

Fifty-nine years in business is good cause for celebration. Certainly those of us involved in the Woodworking and Metalworking Industries can be proud of such an accomplishment.

Established by W.A. Akhurst in 1938, the family run enterprise
operated from a small one room office in Vancouver. After
serving with the Royal Canadian Navy, H.W. "Spud" Akhurst
(son of the founder) joined the company in 1945. He became
President of Akhurst in 1950, following the passing of his father
that same year. Ed Lye, F.C.A., a close family friend, is the
current company President. Brian and Bruce Akhurst (third
generation ) joined the company in the late 60's. In 1994
Graham Akhurst (4th generation) also came to work for Akhurst
and was joined by his brother Ryan Akhurst in 1997. With the
support of its valued employees, Akhurst Machinery has boldly
moved into its 2nd half-century of operation.

Akhurst has established offices and warehouses in Delta, B.C. (new warehouse near Vancouver), Edmonton, Alta., Toronto (Mississauga), Ont., Montreal, Que. and Moncton, N.B. A branch office was opened in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 and subsequently set up as a subsidiary company in 1979. In 1984 Akhurst purchased Coastal Machinery Company, manufacturer of the Coastal Planer-Matcher, which has feed speeds in excess of 2000 fpm. Coastal also manufactures Planer-Moulders, Lumber Splitters and Feed Tables and other planer mill related equipment. Repair, rebuild and retrofit work is also very important to Akhurst. In 1984 a new building was purchased in Portland to accommodate the Coastal
and Akhurst operations, which included administrative offices, and a manufacturing plant.
Akhurst/Portland is now in its own separate office/warehouse. A sales office/warehouse is also established in Seattle, WA.

Including personnel at its various branches and at Coastal, Akhurst employs 120 people. Collectively, the staff have over 800 years of experience in the selling and servicing of woodworking, sawmill, planer mill and board plant, as well as remanufacturing machinery, machine tools and supplies imported from countries around the world.

Service is all important to Akhurst. Each office has fully trained service technicians who assist on installation, training and start-up of equipment, as well as providing repair service to customers if required. An Inventory of over six million dollars in machines and parts is maintained at the various Akhurst locations in order to support our customers with the best of service.

Akhurst is a unique organization in that it covers all areas of the wood processing industry, from processing the log right through to the end product - whether it be lumber, furniture, kitchen cabinets, or other wood related products. Company representatives are in constant touch with manufacturers, through regular visits to their plants and to trade shows all over the world, to ensure that Akhurst offers the latest technology and concepts to its customers. Annual sales for 1996 were just over 43 million dollars reflecting strong continued growth in the company.

The Machine Tool Division of Akhurst is capable of setting up complete Maintenance Shops, Tool Rooms and Fabrication Plants - including small to large machine shops and manufacturing plants with CNC controlled turning and machining centres. This division also has an extensive inventory of repair parts and supplies.

Akhurst Machinery is justifiably proud of its growth over the past 59 years. The Company's past success can be attributed to the support of its many valued customers and suppliers; the future depends on continuing to meet the needs and challenges of the industry - "Our Valued Customers".
