Grinding machines are used to remove material from a workpiece by abrasion—typically an abrasive grinding wheel. Grinding wheels with different grit sizes achieve rougher or finer grinding passes, according to the needs of the application. When precise accuracy and/or surface finish are required, grinding is often used as a finishing process after some other metalworking operation. Grinding is also an effective process for machining workpiece materials that are too hard for milling or turning.
- Surface grinding: Used to create a smooth finish of a flat surface, remove any unwanted marks or scratches, and produce an accurate size and shape.
- Cylindrical grinding: Process for grinding the outer surface of a cylindrical workpiece, such as a shaft or a bearing race. It is used to produce accurate dimensions and achieve a smooth surface finish.
- Centerless grinding: Involves grinding the outside diameter of a cylindrical workpiece, but without the use of a spindle. Instead, the workpiece is supported on a work rest blade and rotated by a regulating wheel. Centerless grinding is used to achieve high production rates and to produce workpieces with accurate dimensions.
- Internal grinding: Involves grinding the inner surface of a hole or bore in a workpiece. It is used to produce accurate dimensions and a smooth surface finish.
- Tool grinding: Involves grinding the cutting edges of a tool, such as a drill bit or a cutting tool used in machining. It is used to produce accurate geometry and achieve a sharp edge for efficient cutting.
- Creep Feed Grinding: Method of grinding where a full depth of cut is taken in a single pass of the grinding wheel, removing a large amount of material in a single operation.
